Tips For Surviving Colic

Did you know that phrases such as “parenting tips” averaged 8,100 hits per month with “how to be a good parent” scoring highly as well with about 2,400 searches each month. I know that I have resorted to google a million times, if not more, and you would think as a mum of 3 children I would know better!

Those first nights of bringing baby home are so full of adrenaline and anxiety that we can not always listen to our baby. Crying is a very useful tool for babies! It can be disheartening to feel like you can’t provide what your child needs, especially in those early days. We parent powered through the 4am wake ups screaming with Fizz and I remember Gav pacing the living room with her during the early hours while I grabbed some sleep. She would cry and cry and cry some more before finally falling asleep in her daddy’s arms. If he tried to put her down it would start over and over again. We started using Colic granules and eventually it all settled down. But it was a lot of powering through and trial and error  to see what worked.

When baby number 3 came along we had a week of perfect text book baby, awake every 3 hours, feeding, playing and sleep. When he was hospitalised at within two weeks of being born we bought home a very different baby with a very different pattern. He was unsettled and there were tears. Being admitted for Brocholitis and then coming home had definitely messed with his system and so the tears we had felt years before came back again. Thankfully we followed a few tips to try and relieve colic, although most believe baby’s grow out of it and it is due to a sluggish digestive system. We definitely found that train new practices helped us. We visited a children’s cranio therapist and once again tried the homeopathic remedy Nelsons Colica® Colic Granule  to receive the bouts of Colic.

Here are a few tips we found worked for us. We can’t promise that they’ll work for you but we would love to help someone who feels a little bit helpless when it comes to Colic!

Cuddles! If nothing else works cuddle your baby. Wrap them and you up with a blanket, grab a DVD, pop the subtitles on and relax. Baby will want to feel your heartbeat and that will soothe them. They want the comfort of knowing that you are there!

Try and keep baby upright during a feed and always try to wind them after a feed. I was under the misconception that breastfed babies didn’t need winding. Know I know that EVERY baby no matter what feeding method needs a burp or a trump!

Also get out of the house, get some fresh air and walk! Most buggies have a resting lean so dont have to be flat to seated. You’ll feel like you want a breather and it really will do you with good!
