Be the Best Godparent Ever!

Though christenings are less popular than they used to be, they’re still considered an essential part of bringing a child into the world for many parents – even if it’s not so much about religion as it is about having another reason to celebrate with friends and family! For some, being asked to be a godparent in one of the highest honors a friend or a family member can offer you. But the role of a godparent is often misunderstood. It’s a role that requires more responsibility that many seem to think – though, in practice, most people will find it’s simply a case of lending additional love and assistance to the new family.

So if you’ve been asked to be a godmother, how can you excel in the role? From the christening itself to the child’s early years, there are several ways to make sure you’re the best godmother ever to both the kid and their parents!

Help with the event

A christening takes up quite a lot of time and effort, more so than a lot of people assume. You shouldn’t assume that your sole role in this entire endeavor is to turn up on the day, bask in the glory of having being selected to be the godparent above all the other friends the parents could have chosen (and who are probably present!) and then go home. You should assist the parents beforehand. Choosing the right venue, selecting the proper clothing, arranging invitations – this can all take more time than you might think, and it’s quite a lot to deal with when you’re a new parent! So help out in any way you can when it comes to organizing the event.

Give the best gifts

This is something you should keep in mind for both the christening itself and your role as a godmother throughout the kid’s life! Gifts for the baby tend to really be gifts for the parents, as they’ll be kept as keepsakes for the future. Baby jewellery by Saffron Bells is a good example of the sort of gift that’s perfect for the day itself. As the child grows, you’ll want to be known as the best gift giver for Christmas and birthdays! From an item on their wishlist (as passed to you by their parents) to something as simple as a crisp cash note, giving gifts is one of the best ways to connect with your godchild.

Make sure you’re available

Note that we said that giving gifts is one of the best ways to connect with your godchild! Really, the best way of connecting with them is to make sure you’re there for the family whenever possible. Being there to babysit is something you’ll want to keep in mind. In fact, offering to babysit so the parents can catch a break is a perfect way of endearing yourself to the whole family! As the child grows, they may be willing to tell you or ask you about things that they may not necessarily feel comfortable talking to their parents about. You should be willing to lend an ear to them.
